Frequently Asked Questions

Take a look at our most frequently asked questions below and if you have any other questions please get in touch with a member of the team.

What does “au pair” mean?

Au pair means en par of equal in French. This means that you will be joining a family as an equal part and why most au pairs leave their host families feeling like an elder sibling.

What will my day to day task look like?

Because every host family is different your schedule will vary but your main duties will be caring for your host family's children. All tasks and duties will be around this so expect to get them ready for school, prepare meals & plan activities. If your host children attend a school you may have your days free but this is the perfect question to ask host families when you start speaking with them.

Why be an au pair?

An au pair is an amazing opportunity for you to experience what life is like living in America. It will allow you to learn, grow and challenge yourself in a new and exciting environment. You will return with 12 months of work experience, life long friends and memories of travelling to some of the most popular places America has to offer.

Can I travel for less than 12 months?

No, the 12 month travel duration is set by the US department of state and is the minimum amount of time you must be able to commit too.

Do I get to choose my location?

We would always say finding your perfect family is more important than finding a family in your perfect location. You will be living with the family so you need to make sure this is right, if they are not located in your ideal state you can always make time to visit whenever you want! However, if you do have a preference we can try and accommodate your needs but the matching process may take longer as you are significantly reducing the amount of applicable families.

What is a weekly stipend?

The weekly stipend is essentially your earnings that you will receive from your host family each week. The US department of state sets this as a minimum of 195.74 USD per week which is the US minimum living wage minus 40% for living cost which your host family is also providing. All host families are required to pay this directly to their au pairs.

How long does the application process take?

The application process can vary depending on each applicant. The minimum amount of time we would advise is 2 - 3 months from application to leaving for the US. However, some applicants take much longer, therefore we advise the earlier you start the application process the better. Once we have more information about you and your plans we will be able to  provide a more concrete timeline.

What references do I need to provide?

You need to provide contact information for 2 childcare references who will be able to verify the amount of experience you have and 1 personal reference who can tell us a little more about your personality and character.

How does the matching process work?

Once your online profile is completed and your application has been approved your profile will go live and will be viewed by host families in America. Host families can then connect with you if they feel you will be a good match for their family. This is when you can choose to accept or decline the connection request. If you choose to accept you can begin talking with the family and arrange calls to get to know each other better. Our team will be on hand throughout this to help support and prepare you for calls with families. Once you know a family well and you both agree that you will be their au pair you can go ahead and confirm the match!

How can I make friends as an au pair?

There are several ways to make friends as an au pair. Your first opportunity will be through our virtual training school. During this time you will be joined by other au pairs from around the world who will be travelling to the United States at a similar time to you. Secondly, when you arrive you will be introduced to your local Area Director who will introduce you to other au pairs in the local community and arrange social events for you to get to know each other better.
